Save Money By Saving Energy

With real estate at historic highs despite the recent downturn in the housing market, many families face mortgage payments that they wish were much lower. While your options for lowering your interest rates might be limited, your methods for saving money are not. A house contains numerous areas for cost savings by conserving energy and using it wisely.

Electricity bills can be a considerable part of your monthly costs if a home uses electric heating, stovetops, hot water heaters or dryers. The same appliances with gas burners can result in giant savings, especially in the winter months. If budget is a factor, avoid purchasing a home containing such electric heating units.

The same goes for the use of electric space heaters. They may be small and compact, but the damage they do to your electric bill is not. A sweater will be much easier on funds in the long run.

Another way to save on heating bills deals with extra rooms. In a room that receives little use, close the heating vents. This makes it easier for your heater to warm the rest of the house.

Speaking of heat, is your hot water system insulated? Newer heaters tend to have sufficient insulation internally. A heater blanket is not recommended unless the exterior of your hot water heater is warm to the touch. The pipes that carry the hot water to the rest of your home, however, may not be insulated. Check your attic and crawl spaces to make sure this potential dollar damage is dealt with directly.

Another obvious way to save on hot water is taking shorter showers. Less obvious is the availability of low-flow showerheads. These devices have improved greatly over the units installed by penny-pinching landlords. While newer homes usually start with these, older homes may not have them. Check out your local hardware or home improvement store for the latest options.

Do full loads when you use the dishwasher or the dryer. Of course, you always have the option of skipping the machines entirely and using elbow grease and natural drying. An indoor clothes rack or outdoor clothesline saves even more money than a gas dryer.

Always clean the lint from your dryer. Lint is a fire hazard if allowed to accumulate and reduces efficiency. Besides the lint trap, you should often check the dryer duct to make sure it is not clogged or pinched.

Finally, many devices draw small amounts of power if not turned off completely. Defeat this power drain by turning off your computer and similar electrical devices overnight. Scientists have calculated that millions of dollars and kilowatts of electricity could be saved if everyone in the United States took this simple energy-saving step.

Benjamin Franklin said it best when he declared that a penny saved is earned. Create more financial room in your household by applying this principle to your utilities bill. Use smart buying and smart methods to end up with money in the bank and not the bills.
